Manarat Al Saadiyat, Abu DhabiBaró Galeria is pleased to announce its participation in Abu Dhabi Art 2023 with a solo show by French-Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos. The exhibition will showcase a selection of animal sculptures from Vasconcelos’ series of crochet-wrapped ceramics, an intervention on pieces originally designed by 19th century Portuguese artist Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro.
Alongside the sculptures, the exhibition will feature one of Vasconcelos iconic Crochet Paintings, made specifically for the occasion, as well as four acrylic pen drawings.

The sculptures shown depict insects, reptiles, amphibians and horses wrapped by the artist in a delicate crocheted lace. Continuing with her practice of repurposing household objects and traditional techniques, Vasconcelos creates original pieces based on designs by 19th century Portuguese sculptor and caricaturist Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro.

By covering these oversized animals in a layer of crochet, Vasconcelos raises questions about femininity, bringing to the forefront a traditional technique that used to be ‘the only means of expression available’ to Portuguese women. In addition, the true intention behind this act is kept ambiguous, leaving the spectator with the task of interpreting the meaning of the intervention:
“Lace decorates and protects, but protection is another manifestation of imprisonment. It’s for the spectator to decide what the crochet means for him, whether it’s showpiece or dungeon.”
