    APRIL 2 – 6, 2025

  • After a five-year hiatus, Baró Galeria proudly announces its return to SP-Arte, reaffirming its strong ties to the Brazilian art scene. Founded in São Paulo in 1999 by Maria Baró, the gallery has become a leading space for contemporary art in Brazil, known for its bold programming and landmark projects throughout more than two decades of activity. The temporary break from the fair followed the gallery’s relocation to Spain—Maria Baró’s home country—and the opening of a new branch in Abu Dhabi. Now, with a renewed and increasingly global presence, Baró Galeria returns to SP-Arte with a vibrant program that embraces the diversity of contemporary practices and reinforces its commitment to Brazilian art.

For this edition, the gallery will debut never-before-seen works by Japanese artist Ayako Rokkaku, created during an exclusive residency leading up to the fair. On April 2 & 3, during the opening, Rokkaku will also present a live painting performance.

A self-taught artist and one of the leading names in Japanese contemporary art, Rokkaku is internationally acclaimed for her vivid, emotionally charged canvases. Working without sketches or brushes, she paints directly with her fingers, producing dynamic, fluorescent-toned compositions inhabited by strong, iconic heroines. Her live painting sessions offer an intimate look into her spontaneous and immersive creative process.

Baró Galeria’s booth will also feature works by Brazilian artists Lourival Cuquinha, Tiago Tebet and AVAF, Balinese artist Citra Sasmita, Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos, and Venezuelan artists Luis Salazar and Néstor García. The gallery’s return to SP-Arte marks a new chapter in its trajectory, reaffirming its international outlook and ongoing dedication to fostering contemporary art in Brazil and beyond.

  • Ayako Rokkaku: Live Painting

For the first time in Brazil, Japanese artist Ayako Rokkaku — debuting her works at SP-Arte — will host an exclusive Live Painting session. The audience will have a unique opportunity to witness her creative process up close, observing the transformation of the canvas.

A self-taught artist, Ayako Rokkaku is one of Japan's leading contemporary artists and a prominent figure in the current international contemporary art scene. Her work is characterized by energetic canvases filled with emotional depth, where color and gesture come together in a unique way. Without preparatory sketches or underpainting, Rokkaku uses her fingers as tools — spontaneity is her driving force, as she creates mesmerizing scenes highlighted by fluorescent tones and inhabited by bold heroines. Her live painting sessions are intimate occasions where the audience has the chance to experience her fluid and free-flowing creative process.
