The Armory Show 2025: Booth 425
-
Baró Galeria is delighted to announce its participation in The Armory Show 2025, marking its second consecutive year at the fair. For this edition, the gallery will present a solo booth dedicated to the work of Joana Vasconcelos, featuring pieces from her series Bestiary and Crochet Paintings.
Joana Vasconcelos stands among Portugal’s most prominent contemporary artists. Her practice engages critically with the boundaries between art and craft, object and monument, tradition and transformation. Through a sustained investigation of textile-based processes—such as crochet, embroidery, and ceramics—her work reconfigures vernacular techniques within a sculptural and conceptual framework.
At The Armory Show 2025, the booth will center on works from Bestiary, in which animal forms are encased in crocheted coverings produced in collaboration with artisans from the island of Pico. These textile interventions act as second skins, prompting reflections on the intersection of nature and culture, the dynamics of labor, and the construction of identity through material. Alongside these works, Vasconcelos' Crochet Paintings continue this dialogue through textile surfaces that engage the politics of ornamentation and authorship. With a career spanning over two decades, Vasconcelos has exhibited at major international venues, including the Venice Biennale, Guggenheim Bilbao, and Château de Versailles, and remains a key figure in contemporary discourse on materiality, heritage, and power.
