Colônia : Daniel Lanes
Baró Galeria is pleased to announce the exhibition Colônia by Daniel Lannes, starting on May 30 at our new space in Jardins. Advancing his research, Lannes brings to São Paulo visual chronicles that express, in addition to his fascination with the human figure, a rich historical panorama of Brazil.
The exhibition is based on the idea of Colonial Brazil and unfolds into images revealing iconic events and personalities from post-colonial Brazilian history. From the arrival of the Portuguese Royal Family, through the formation of the Republic, to the present day, the canvases capture the lingering promiscuity of customs and attitudes born from the communion between the colonizer and the colonized. Whereas Lannes once imbued seemingly ordinary scenes with epic solemnity, he now infuses everyday neglect into grand scenes of the Brazilian imagination.
The artist was born in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, in 1981, where he studied social communication and industrial design. He also spent a year at the New York State University of Fine Arts as a scholarship student and earned a Master’s in Visual Languages from UFRJ. His career has become notable for the metalinguistic representation of the artwork in its consecrated space and for the fusion of the typical and folkloric with the most recent popular iconography.
