Overview
Baró Galeria is pleased to announce Volcanic Ash, Rusted Steel, the first solo exhibition in Brazil by the North-American artist Daniel Arsham to be inaugurated on February 15, 2014. The partnership between the artist and the gallery started in 2013, when the gallery first presented at the Armory Show NY the piece "Mirror Error". In the same year, another work from the same series was exhibited at SP-Arte, and soon became one of the highlights from the fair.
For 2014, Baró will open with the solo show of Arsham centered on notions of architectural erosion and decay. "I will be showing works that all have a relationship to time and geology mixed with man-made constructions. Brazil had a very interesting and vibrant architectural movement that has many successes and beautiful failures. I will be looking towards the relationship of architecture and nature as well as how time and the elements impact architectural surfaces ", defines the artist.
Daniel Arsham was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1980 and currently lives and works in New York, United States. Known for turning the every-day life themes into something spectacular and surreal and guided by architectural concepts, he transits between painting, sculpture, installation, set design and dance performances “Out of all the products that humans make, architecture is the biggest and most lasting and relevant form of cultural expression – it’s the only thing that’s going to last”, says Arsham. In 2007, he developed the set design for the show eyeSpace, the first of four that he would do for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, the legendary company that once featured collaborations with important names in art such as Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella and Bruce Nauman. In 2011, he created a window installation for the Dior flagship brand in NY and in 2013 was invited to illustrate for the Travel Books series of the brand Louis Vuitton.
His last important project from 2013 was developed in partnership with the composer, musician and producer Pharrell Williams resulting in a replica of Casio Keyboard MT-500 - the first to be used by Williams in his career - consisted of volcanic ash, broken glass, crystal and steel.
Along with Alex Mustonen they founded Snarkitecture, a collaborative design studio that operates between the territories of art and architecture, and will also be part of the exhibition at Baró Galeria.
For the exhibition in São Paulo, the artist will present for the first time 16 pieces (4 paintings and 12 sculptures) that will range objects of marble, volcanic ash, quartz fragments and broken glass emanating an archaeological relics atmosphere, sculptures created out of self-portraits and a large installation in the middle of the gallery that will dialogue directly with the hangar space of Baró.
