LURIXS: Manuel Caeiro

10 November - 20 December 2011 São Paulo
Overview

In collaboration with Galeria Lurixs from Rio de Janeiro, Baró presents a solo exhibition by Portuguese artist Manuel Caeiro (Évora, Portugal, 1975).

Caeiro’s artistic research stems from a multidisciplinary reflection, encompassing architecture, drawing, and painting. These disciplines are confronted in the construction of space, positioning the viewer not as a mere spectator, but as an active participant and creator.

In Caeiro’s work, the house and its extensions hold a central role. Since his early investigations, the artist has shown a keen attention to the signs of making and the passage of time. His recent works, created using safety structures from construction sites, seek to expand their pictorial and sculptural potential. The goal is to create pictorially functional spaces that bring the viewer closer to architectural structures that invite contemplation.

In 1999, Caeiro began his artistic career while still a student at the Lisbon School of Fine Arts. Since then, he has participated in numerous exhibitions, including the solo shows “Reconstruction and Rebuilding” in Guimarães, Portugal (2006), “Reconstruyendo el Vacío” in León, Spain (2007), and “Paredes Ocas” in Barcelona, Spain (2008). His group exhibitions include “Exposição/exhibition Terceira Metade” at MAM Rio de Janeiro (2011), “Surrounding Matta-Clark” in Lisbon, Portugal (2006), and “Parangolé”, a survey of works from the 1990s in Brazil, Portugal, and Spain.

Caeiro has also been featured in international art fairs, including ARCO Madrid, VOLTA New York, SPARTE São Paulo, Arte Lisboa, and the first edition of ARTRIO in September.
