Born on this day in 1920: Lygia Clark

Celebrating the legacy of the pioneering Brazilian artist.

‘How many beings am I to always seek the reality of contradictions in the other being that inhabits me? How many affirmations have I been able to create and how many negations have sprung from what I have affirmed? How many joys and pains has my body, opening up like a cauliflower, offered to the other being that is secret within myself?’

A pivotal figure in 20th-century Latin American art and co-founder of the Neo-Concrete movement, Clark’s pioneering work redefined the relationship between artwork and viewer, transforming passive observation into active participation.

Lygia Clark’s first exhibition at Baró Galeria in Mallorca, ‘Oublier le corps…’, is on view in Palma until November 10.
