Last chance to see Violeta Quispe's 'Apus Suyos' (2024) and 'El Matrimonio de la chola' (2022), on view at Venice's Arsenale as part of 'Stranieri Ovunque', the International Art Exhibition at the 60th Venice Biennale.
Violeta Quispe (Lima, 1989) upholds her family's artistic heritage while advancing the visual tradition of Sarhua through a contemporary lens. Her work, rooted in a critical feminist perspective, explores the role of Sarhuino women in their society, challenging traditional gender roles and advocating for greater representation in spaces historically dominated by men. Violeta’s practice intertwines art and activism, addressing pressing political issues.
"Apus Suyos arose as a result of a personal questioning of the gender roles rooted in Andean communities, a concern that led me to reflect on the representation of nature. Questions arose in me such as: Why are some mountains perceived as females or males? Why is the earth known as "La Pachamama" (mother earth), a feminine term?"
