Citra Sasmita presents Who Stole the Sky at Kunsthall Stavanger, Norway, from March 12 through August 16, 2026. The artist's first solo exhibition in the Nordic region features a newly commissioned body of work across painting, textiles, sculpture, and installation, bringing together Balinese cosmology, mythology, and contemporary feminist perspectives in an immersive exhibition created specifically for the institution.
Drawing on the traditional Kamasan painting technique while expanding beyond its conventions, Sasmita explores themes of ancestral knowledge, ecology, ritual, and cultural memory. The exhibition creates a dialogue between the Balinese concept of the Sanga Mandala and the Norse cosmology of Yggdrasil, revealing unexpected connections between two distinct systems of understanding the relationship between humanity, nature, and the spiritual world. Newly commissioned works include The Rites of Creation, Tree of Eden, Rise of the Mountain and Sea, and Cosmic Rebirth.
Curated by Heather Jones and Kristina Ketola Bore, Who Stole the Sky marks another important institutional presentation in Sasmita's international career, following major exhibitions at institutions including the Barbican Centre in London and participation in biennials such as Sharjah, Sydney, São Paulo, and Toronto.
