Peruvian artist Violeta Quispe has been selected to participate in the XXIV Bienal Internacional de Arte de Cerveira (BIAC), on view from July 18 to December 30, 2026, in Vila Nova de Cerveira, Portugal. Under the title Territórios sem Fronteira (Borderless Territories), this year's edition brings together 41 artists from 16 countries, examining the ways contemporary art responds to shifting ideas of territory, identity, belonging, and exchange. Quispe is the only Peruvian artist included in the international exhibition.
Curated by Mafalda Santos, the biennial considers borders as geographical, political, social, and symbolic constructs, bringing together exhibitions, performances, public programmes, residencies, and site-specific commissions throughout the town of Vila Nova de Cerveira. Since its founding in 1978, the Bienal Internacional de Arte de Cerveira has become one of Portugal's leading recurring exhibitions dedicated to contemporary art and one of the longest-running biennials on the Iberian Peninsula.
Quispe's participation places her work within an international dialogue alongside artists from Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Her practice, rooted in textile traditions, collective memory, and Andean knowledge, resonates with the biennial's broader reflection on territory, cultural identity, and the relationships between landscape, community, and history.
