José María Sicilia, mounir fatmi and Amparo Sard's works on view at Es Baluard Museu, in Palma. 'In Conversation: The Museum and the Collection', curated by Eva Cifre and Soad Houman, will remain open until May 26.
Inaugurated on the occasion of the museum's 20th anniversary, the exhibition proposes a chronological itinerary through the works in the museum's collection (from the late 19th century onwards), seeking dialogues on three levels: the dialogue between the artworks on display, between the collection and the building that houses the institution and, in the museum's C space (where fatmi's 'From where comes the wind' is displayed), the show "aims to open up the debate on what a 21st-century museum should be like".
The works by Amparo Sard on display are set in dialogue with three photographs by Francesca Woodman, ‘leading us to the self-portrait, to self-referential work, in search of identity and the fragility of human existence’, while José Maria Sicilia's 'Untitled' (1989) shares space with other national artists from the so-called 'Resurgence of Painting', from the 1980s.
“Through the exhibition 'In Conversation: The Museum and the Collection', we propose to look back over the 20 years that have passed in the heart of the institution, to reaffirm our identity through the Collection, to bring the Museum and contemporary art closer to the public and to highlight the possibilities of the museum institution in our contemporary world when facing the challenges of the future as a society”.
