Overview
Massimo Vitali (b. 1944, Como, Italy; lives and works between Lucca and Berlin) is an Italian photographer celebrated for his large-format, high-resolution images that transform everyday leisure scenes into complex social panoramas.
Since the mid-1990s, Vitali has documented beaches, clubs, ski resorts, and airports from elevated vantage points, rendering vibrant social landscapes that oscillate between documentary precision and painterly abstraction. His images explore collective behavior, social structures, and the contradictions of contemporary life. Vitali has exhibited widely at major institutions and biennials, including the Venice Biennale, and his works are held in prominent museum collections such as the Guggenheim, Centre Pompidou, Reina Sofía, and Stedelijk.
