Overview
Violeta Quispe (Lima, 1989) upholds her family's artistic heritage while advancing the visual tradition of Sarhua through a contemporary lens. Her work, rooted in a critical feminist perspective, explores the role of Sarhuino women in their society, challenging traditional gender roles and advocating for greater representation in spaces historically dominated by men. Violeta’s practice intertwines art and activism, addressing pressing political issues.
Her work has been exhibited in esteemed institutions, including MATP, Casa O’Higgins (Lima, 2021), LUM (Lima, 2021), and MUCEN (Lima, 2022). In 2020, she was selected to represent native communities from Latin America and the Caribbean at the VIII General Assembly of the Convention, organized by UNESCO and the United Nations, in recognition of her contribution and resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly through her mask art project. Further solidifying her international reputation, Violeta participated at the 60th International Art Exhibition at the Venice Biennale in 2024, ‘Stranieri Ovunque-Foreigners Everywhere'.
