Joana Vasconcelos: Venus – Valentino Garavani through the eyes of Joana Vasconcelos i

at MAAT – Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology in Lisbon, PT

Venus – Valentino Garavani through the eyes of Joana Vasconcelos is now on view at MAAT – Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology in Lisbon, as part of the museum’s 10th anniversary celebrations.

The exhibition places Joana Vasconcelos’s monumental sculptures in dialogue with haute couture creations by Valentino Garavani. At its centre is the Valkyrie Venus, a new work from the artist’s ongoing series of suspended installations. It was made entirely by hand by the artist’s studio team and frames a selection of Valentino’s catwalk dresses. Alongside it are earlier works such as Marilyn, the immersive Garden of Eden and Independent Heart #3. Together they reveal a shared devotion to craft, detail and the value of women’s labour.

First presented at PM23 in Rome, Venus now arrives in Lisbon, where Vasconcelos lives and works.
